The state of Texas has played an important role in neurofeedback. Several of the important early pioneers have come from or done much of their work in Texas. Neurofeedback began to become popular once the ADHD and substance abuse protocols became popular following research by Joel Lubar on ADHD and Eugene Peniston and Paul Kulkosky on substance abuse and Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, PTSD. As I remember a lot of activity started around 1989. Adam Crane, who I used to work for, and a team that he assembled designed and manufactured a neurofeedback system called the CapScan. Some of the names that I remember who bought some of the early systems and began training and providing neurofeedback services include Genie Bodenhamer-Davis, Ph.D. Director, University of North Texas Neurotherapy Program, Bob Dickson – Open Door Mission, Houston, TX, Nancy White, Psychologist, PhD. I had the opportunity to provide technical support for some. Some of the growth was around providers who were using the substance abuse protocols to help people who were affected by the cocaine and crack cocaine epidemic that was happening at the time. Since Houston is home of the Texas Medical Center which includes many of the best in medical care including Baylor College of Medicine, CHI Saint Luke’s Health, Harris Health System, and Houston Methodist, it is an ideal place for finding and cultivating new providers. Neurofeedback training uses technology to measure the electrical signals produced by the brain as neurons communicate, and feeding back that information in order to train the brain to make positive changes. Neurofeedback training is being used in addition to other therapies to help people with symptoms related to sleep, stress, attention, emotional issues, trauma, learning difficulties, and substance abuse. Biofeedback training is an effective method for reducing the negative effects of stress. There are many sources of stress including politics, natural disasters, terrorist acts, work, family, and financial problems, and traffic. In this world of 24 hour TV and radio news plus news on our computers, we are constantly bombarded with stressful, negative information. If that wasn’t enough we have smart phones, tablets, and smart watches with us at all times to make sure that we don’t miss anything. Wherever we are we can stay up on what is happening. Besides the information we get from news sources, we also get blogs and podcasts. In addition to these stress sources, the people who we interact with who cause us stress are able to call, text, or email us 24 hours a day 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Biofeedback Training Method of Reducing Stress People need methods of reducing the negative effects of stress. Many of the solutions that are offered are medications. Even when they are effective they often come with unwanted side-effects. Thankfully there are some non-drug methods of reducing stress. Biofeedback training is one such method. Biofeedback instruments measure muscle tension, skin temperature, skin conductance (sweat), breathing, heart rate, and brainwave activity. With biofeedback training people learn to control the way their body reacts to stress by viewing a biofeedback device while they practice relaxation exercises. More Info : How Biofeedback Training

Most people I talk to agree that we are living in very stressful times. Stress management tools and techniques are more needed than ever. Books about stress are popular. I came across an interesting one recently called Tech Stress, How Technology is Hijacking our lives, strategies for coping, and pragmatic ergonomics by Erik Peper, Ph.D., Richard Harvey, Ph.D., and Nancy Faass, MSW, MPH. The description on the back of the book starts by saying –“Re-envisioning your relationship with technology to reclaim health, happiness, and sanity in a plugged-in world.” We cannot get away from technology and probably shouldn’t want to. Technology makes it easier to do most things faster and more efficiently. We rely on new technology and almost forget about how we used to do things before it was available. After reading about the Tech Stress book in Biofeedback Magazine, I quickly ordered a copy. I have known the main author Erik Peper for over 30 years so I contacted him to congratulate him on the book and ask if he would be willing to do an interview with him about book. He gladly accepted. I had hoped to talk with him for ten or fifteen minutes instead we ended up talking for over fifty minutes about the topic of stress and technology and the book. Probably the biggest source of stress caused by technology has to be cell phones. We spend lots of time with our necks bent and our heads looking down at our cell phones. This causes physical stress on our neck muscles because of the extra contraction required to hold the weight of our head in that position. It causes stress on our eyes because we are spending lots of time looking at the small screen that is very close to our eyes. Erik Peper says that it is healthier to vary the distance that our eyes focus on from close to far away throughout the day. More info : Stress Minimizing Books - biofeedbackinternational

What supplies do you need to have to use biofeedback technology? Some biofeedback modalities require little or no supplies while others require consumable supplies that you need a ready inventory of. A Plethysmograph (PPG) sensor which is used to measure Heart Rate, Blood Volume, and Heart Rate variability may use a clip or Velcro band that is permanently attached to the sensor. In this case, there would be no replaceable supplies needed. The Electrocardiograph (EKG) sensor measures Heart Rate and Heart Rate Variability. The EKG sensor uses adhesive disposable sensors that stick to the skin and snap or clip to the electrode cable. These usually come in packages of 50 – 300. Alcohol prep pads are used to clean the skin before applying the sensors. Temperature biofeedback sensors either use a Velcro band to attach to the finger or you can use paper or cloth tape. If you use Velcro then you don’t have to replace it very often. If you are using tape, then you need to keep a supply. For Skin Conductance/EDR/GSR, you should be using sensor cream or gel that comes in a tube or bottle. You only use a small amount each time so a tube or bottle lasts a long time. Electromyograph (EMG) uses 2 or 3 adhesive disposable electrodes similar to the EKG sensor. These are placed on the skin over the muscle area that you want to record from. You also need alcohol prep pads to clean the skin before applying the sensors. The Respiration sensor uses a belt that goes around the abdomen or chest. It attaches with either Velcro or a clip. There aren’t any supplies needed. More Info : Biofeedback Training Boston MA | APA continuing Credits

What does stress have to do with the enormous problems we are dealing with related to COVID-19 Corona virus? There are many connections. I will discuss a few here. We are being constantly bombarded with news coverage about the problem. This alone can increase worrying and anxiety. It is important to watch enough news to stay informed about the fast-moving problem, rules and regulations and things you can do to protect and help yourself and your family. It has been suggested that we watch just enough for those purposes and then turn the news off. Listen to some music. Watch a funny show or movie. Catch up on some reading. Watching the news all day will most likely only make you feel worse. Not all of the people exposed to the Corona virus become sick. Some people might never know that they were infected because of the lack of symptoms. Why is that? If we only knew how many things that could potentially make us sick, we have been exposed to, we would be amazed. Our immune system is constantly fighting off enemies without our conscious knowledge. It may be that those who have stronger immune systems are less likely to develop symptoms and become ill. One of the things that can reduce the effectiveness of our immune system is stress. Have you ever noticed that you “catch a cold” much more often when you are stressed or emotionally upset? The immune system, like many other systems in the body does not function as well when you are under stress. Due to government regulations most businesses that are not considered essential have been forced to scale way back or close. Some people are sick and can’t go to work even if they are considered essential. Many businesses that are still open have less customers than usual. People are getting laid off and small business owners are struggling to pay their expenses let alone take a salary. Most people have a high level of financial insecurity due to reduced or halted income. This is producing a high level of financial stress. Many people are wondering how they are going to pay their bills without their income. Schools are closed. Children are home with their parents. Husbands and wives are home with each other much more of the day than usual. In many cases it is much easier to get along with people if you spend less time with them. When you suddenly have to spend more time with the same people it can be stressful. This is a time when it is very important to practice stress management. Practice progressive muscle relaxation and slow deep breathing. Go for walks while practicing social distancing. Listen to your favorite music. Use a relaxation app. Use a home biofeedback device. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Use some of your usual commute time to get some extra sleep. Your body and mind could use it and it can help to reduce your stress level and perhaps boost your immune system to fight against this COVID-19 virus. He had reached an advanced stage of anorexia. As a 54 year old construction worker, he was normally 6′ and a well muscled 155 lbs. At the beginning of therapy he was 118 lbs., eyes sunken, somewhat manic, claiming his diet of mostly lettuce was making him high and filling him with energy. He was almost completely isolated as his behavior had destroyed his marriage and alienated him from his friends. He had not worked for five years at his trade as he was on disability. He was almost broke even though he earned between sixty and one hundred thousand per year when he was working. He was obsessed with a well known cult which had counseled him to distance himself from his family, and against seeking therapeutic help. He had invested over $200,000.00, virtually his life savings, in the cults system of “therapy and enlightenment.” He discussed the possibility of suicide on several occasions in the beginning and was experiencing many stress related disorders including sleeplessness, irritability, hyperactivity, intense loneliness, and much obsessive/compulsive symptomology including going over and over often unimportant details. He fluctuated between overtly aggressive, hyper behavior as he tried to convert people to his ideas, and passively aggressive behavior when individuals attempted to establish relationship with him. A strong concern at the beginning of therapy was that irreversible organ damage might have already occurred because of his complexion, gaunt, haunted appearance and the obviously massive loss of muscle tissue, even though he continued to exercise vigorously (as is the case with many anorexics). Biofeedback therapy was for him a desperate last resort. Within three weeks of beginning neurofeedback training (adjunctive to counseling) his demeanor had changed remarkably, he had begun to gain weight and he entered enthusiastically into the life rebuilding process. He began sleeping better, felt much calmer and more optimistic, less lonely and isolated. He began to form new relationships and he was opening up and talking to people in ways that were impossible before. He wanted to report on his “Love Stories”. An interesting example follows: He would go to playgrounds and sit and watch children play. This made him feel so happy at times that he would weep. This appears to be healthy abreactive phenomena happening hours or days after actual neurofeedback training. People he met or had known before seemed to be easier to be with. He saw that he had changed and was giving others the chance to be affectionate and not blocking them with his rigidity, restlessness and passive aggression. He began to eat a more balanced diet and gained weight reaching 150 lbs. within the first year. More Info : neurofeedback training | neurofeedback training Miami

Florida is an important place for neurofeedback. It is the home of the Florida Biofeedback Society which is based in Boynton Beach, Florida. This is one of the most active biofeedback organizations in the nation. It is a resource for potential clients looking for biofeedback and neurofeedback providers. The website is http://www.floridabiofeedback.org/ They also have workshops where providers can receive training and continuing education credit. The Florida Biofeedback Society offers a membership that includes a subscription to its Florida Biofeedback publication, networking opportunities, as well as other perks. Applied Neurosciences Inc. is an EEG software company based in Saint Petersburg, Florida. They develop software for clinical and research applications of EEG including brain mapping and Neurofeedback training Florida. The company was founded by Robert Thatcher. Their flagship software product is the NeuroGuide software program. It is one of the most known and important software programs in the neurofeedback field. Many neurofeedback practitioners use NeuroGuide and other Applied Neurosciences software. There are many drug treatment centers in Florida partly due to the continuing opioid problems there. Neurofeedback is also used as a therapy for substance abuse. Although only some centers currently offer neurofeedback, I expect that more of these centers will be offering this service. Florida is a popular retirement destination. Incontinence is a problem that many older people suffer with. Biofeedback is an excellent therapeutic intervention for incontinence. Its efficacy is highly rated. Many older people are also concerned with loss of cognitive function and memory. Neurofeedback is effective for improving cognitive function and shows promise in the area of memory because of its ability to stimulate neuronal connections. Most psychologists in the United States need to attend training to keep up with new developments in the field and to remind them of things that they may have learned a long time ago. There are many options for training including face-to-face programs, online programs, and material that psychologists can read. There is a multitude of different topics that can be studied. Since psychologists have to take training, it makes sense to make it something interesting, enjoyable, and useful. Biofeedback and neurofeedback are subjects that check all of those boxes. Psychologists tend to do a lot of talking and paperwork as a part of their routine. Some of this can become monotonous. Biofeedback and neurofeedback use technology that helps the clients of psychologists learn about themselves. It helps them to learn how to make real, physiological, measurable changes. They can learn to change how their body reacts to stress using biofeedback. They can train their brain to become more regulated through neurofeedback. I have spoken to many practicing psychologists who have only had minimal exposure to biofeedback or neurofeedback during their initial education in psychology. Most have not had extensive training in this either area. Many professionals that get trained in an area want to become certified if certification is available. The most recognized body offering certification in biofeedback and neurofeedback is the Biofeedback Certification International Alliance (BCIA). The didactic educational requirement for BCIA peripheral biofeedback certification is 42 hours. The requirement for neurofeedback is 36 hours. With a course approved for APA continuing education credits for biofeedback or neurofeedback, a psychologist can receive a large number of required hours in a short amount of time while learning an exciting and effective skill. This can be a great opportunity for psychologists to gain required hours while learning an evidenced-based therapy tool that can also bring some variety to their work and help their clients as well. Motivated or high functioning people are different. Ask these people why they strive and many reasons unfold. Some report success as a compensation for early difficulties. Many others report that they seem to have been born with a gift and were given encouragement and resources to succeed. External forces differ. It is clear that in one area there is agreement. An internal desire to do well is the largest single common thread that signifies a potential high achiever. Those with this internal desire have learned to reflect on correcting past actions. EEG Neurofeedback or Alpha Training is one way to increase the ability to perform at a higher level. Alpha re-tunes the mind by calming the body and allowing the mind to be free. One’s mind is creating neural pathways by simple repeated thoughts and or actions. Where are your thoughts leading you? How disciplined are any of us about where our minds or bodies are pointing? WRAP is a meme that serves as a reminder to keep positive energy surroundings one’s goals. The WRAP formula signifies the importance of wanting (goals), remembering the importance of attitude and of course persistence. Wanting one’s goals while keeping a positive attitude about trying and often failing is easy to claim and hard to live. Failure might mean you learned but perhaps it hurt. Remembering this double-edged sword is useful. Now you know more about where to bend and where to stand. Reflections help one to mentally practice for the future. Those who are persistence know about the long wait. It is no big deal. Those willing to thoughtfully experiment can often achieve big results. More Info : APA Continuing Education Credit, Georgia

Saybrook University and the Behavioral Medicine Research and Training Foundation have partnered to offer continuing education courses in many areas of psychophysiology including biofeedback and related topics. These courses are intended for professionals such as clinicians, coaches, and educators rather than the public. As these are continuing education courses, students earn CE credits for each course rather than college course credit. The courses are not part of a certification program but can be applied to several such programs. Students do receive a course completion certificate upon successful completion of a course. Psychophysiology and its role in health care, education, and optimal performance coaching: Applied psychophysiology focuses on the amelioration / treatment and prevention of disease, reduction of stress responses, and creation of optimal performance through teaching people techniques for recognizing and correcting abnormal physiological responses. Every course offered in this program is based on solid research published in main-stream journals. Efficacy of each technique taught is discussed and substantiated. About the courses : Our continuing education courses are available to clinicians, coaches, and educators interested in learning about psychophysiology and biofeedback. This combination of courses is intended to provide professionals with the basic knowledge they need to understand psychophysiology and incorporate it into their practices. They are all in distance / home learning, format including pre-recorded audiovisual lectures, movies, readings in texts, and frequent interactions with the instructor. Students work at their own paces and have up to a year after the date of purchase to complete a course. All course material is accessed from the course web site so people interested in our courses must have consistent access to the internet. These are distance learning courses (rather than self directed learning courses) as there is substantial interaction between the faculty and student. Distance education refers to instruction delivered to students who are separated from their instructor and in support of regular and substantive interaction between them, whether in real time or through time delay. Substantial interaction is where a student and a faculty participate in back and forth discussions on an educational topic. More Info : APA Continuing Education Credit, Georgia

injuries can be caused in many different ways. Whether they are diagnosed or not can depend on how severe they are, where they happen, who is around when they happen, and whether the injured person seeks medical care. Some of the sources of brain injuries include car accidents, sports injuries, slip and falls, physical fights and assaults among other things. When the brain is injured the electrical activity and function of the brain is affected. Neurofeedback training is a way to help to normalize the electrical activity of the brain which in turn helps improve function. Some of the problems that may develop with a head injury include problems with memory, difficulty focusing, anger, and diminished self-control. Some of these problems are similar to what normal teenagers struggle with. This is often attributed to incomplete development of the front of the brain. Interestingly, many people who suffer these symptoms also show abnormal EEG when tested with neurofeedback equipment. One of the patterns that is common is high amplitude delta and theta in the frontal areas of the brain. This seems to interfere with normal functioning and can be part of the cause of some of the symptoms. By using neurofeedback equipment to measure and feedback EEG information on a computer screen clients can learn to regulate their brain activity. After a series of training the EEG is often normalized and symptoms decreased. Besides rest, there are relatively few effective treatments for brain injury. Neurofeedback training seems to be a good non-invasive therapy for brain injury. More Info : Neurofeedback Training New York

Neurofeedback training Florida is a method of using technology to measure the electrical signals produced by the brain as neurons communicate, and feeding back that information in order to train the brain to make positive changes. The electrical signals are measured via small sensors placed on the scalp. These sensors connect to an instrument that connects to a computer. The signals are processed and displayed in the form of line graphs, bar graphs, and digital displays. The process uses goals that are set to either encourage increasing or decreasing the power of certain frequencies ie theta, alpha, beta. When the goals are met feedback is given to alert the trainee that their brain is in the desired state. The feedback can take the form of a light turning on or changing color, an animation, movie, or game playing, or a sound or music playing. This feedback is reinforcing to the brain and encourages the brain to repeat what it just did to get the feedback. More Info Click Here : Neurofeedback Training

Mental health symptoms and solutions are being openly discussed more than ever. Most days that I turn on the news I hear at least one story related to mental health. Just today I heard a report about three separate people who were survivors or a relative of a survivor of a school shooting who committed suicide. We often hear reports of the devastation across the country related to abuse of opioid drugs. Concussions caused by car accidents, slip and falls, sports injuries cause memory loss, behavior and mood changes as well as other problems. People are being diagnosed with ADD and ADHD and prescribed medications that may have to be taken for the rest of their lives with potential side effects. Neurofeedback equipment is being used as one therapy modality that can help with many mental health conditions. Healthcare professionals including psychologists, psychiatrists, neurologists, mental health counselors, social workers, nurses, chiropractors are using neurofeedback adjunctively with other therapies to help people with many of these mental health problems. For more information on conditions that neurofeedback therapy is used for refer to Comprehensive Neurofeedback Bibliography D. Corydon Hammond, PhD. More Info : Biofeedback Training Boston, MA
